Addressing Suicide Risk (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)

Specific learning outcome:    Students will complete written assignments that demonstrate their understanding of specific ways to minimize suicide risk in their clients.  They will be able to summarize the most important aspects of gathering information, accessing supervision, and taking responsible action when substance abuse clients have suicidal thoughts or behaviors.                                      

Clinical Supervision (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)

Specific learning outcome:  Students will develop improved supervision skills, by demonstrating (through written assignments) knowledge of clinical supervision models, ways to address burnout and compassion fatigue, healthy boundaries and dual relationships, methods of observation, and legal and ethical issues relating to clinical supervision.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                      

Specific learning outcome:  Students will complete homework assignments that demonstrate their familiarity with cognitive behavioral counseling techniques that will improve client outcomes.

Comprehensive Case Management (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                

Specific learning outcome: Students will demonstrate competence in case management by completing written assignments on using case management skills.  Assignments will reflect knowledge of the importance of case management, the core competencies and guiding principles of case management, specific strategies for special populations with special needs, and case management evaluation and quality assurance.   

Confidentiality Law Compliance (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                   

Specific learning outcome: Students will demonstrate their ability to comply with relevant confidentiality requirementrs by completing a multipple-choice test that covers federal confidentiality guidelines, including covered entities, protected information, permitted disclosures, and restricted disclosures.

Ethics (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                   

Specific learning outcome: Through written assignments involving several case studies, students will demonstrate their ability to make ethical decisions for themselves, their clients, their programs, and their professions.  The written work will reflect an  understanding of ethical considerations in the client/counselor relationship, ethical considerations in professional relationships, Seven Steps to ethical decision making, guidelines for resolving ethical dilemmas, and the differences among treatment, prevention, supervisor, social work, and criminal justice codes.

 Family-Involved Substance Abuse Treatment (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)              

Specific learning outcome: Students will demonstrate their ability to achieve successful outcomes by completing written assignments on integrating the most helpful assumptions, strategies, and techniques of family therapy and substance abuse treatment.

Group Leadership Skills (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                 

Specific learning outcome: Students will demonstrate their ability to achieve successful outcomes by completing written assignments that show understanding of personal qualities conducive to successful group leadership, at least three different types of group leadership skills and styles, helpful therapeutic techniques that can be used in group therapy, how to address common problems in group, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

Implementing Evidence Based Practices (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                 

Specific learning outcome:  Students will complete written assignments that demonstrate their ability to implement evidence based practices.  This includes demonstrating an understanding of EBPs most compatible and appropriate for each setting, gauging a program’s readiness to change, defining goals and overcoming obstacles to their achievement, how to evaluate your success, and strategies to sustain the use of the EBP.

Improving Outcomes for Clients with HIV/AIDS (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning outcome:  Students will demonstrate, through written assignments, their ability to achieve successful outcomes for their HIV/AIDS clients by understanding the progression of the disease, risk reduction techniques, resolving mental health issues in HIV clients, resolving substance abuse issues in HIV clients, and how to develop and maintain a competent staff.

Improving Outcomes for Dually Diagnosed Clients (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning outcome: Students will demonstrate, through written assignments, their abilty to achieve successful outcomes for their dually diagnosed clients, by understanding the differences between the AOD and mental health treatment systems, the components of successful case management for dually diagnosed clients, treatment considerations for clients with mood disorders, treatment considerations for clients with anxiety disorders, and treatment considerations for clients with personality disorders.

Improving Outcomes for Mandated Clients (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning outcome: Students will learn perspectives and techniques that will improve outcomes for their mandated clients, and through written assignments, demonstrate their understanding of reflective listening and complimenting techniques, questions most likely to identify coping skills and hidden strengths, effective use of "Columbo" questions and embellished reflections, exploring exceptions to client problems, and identifying room for improvement in approaches presented in case studies.

Integrating Tobacco Use Interventions  (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning outcome: Through written assignments, students will demonstrate their ability to achieve successful outcomes for their clients by integrating tobacco use interventions.  Written assignments will demonstrate an understanding of the Stages of Change Model as it relates to tobacco use, the use of NRTs and other medications as aids to quit smoking, the concept of change talk and counselor tasks relating to it, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Relapse Prevention Therapy as they relate to tobacco use, and the principles of good treatment planning.

Integrating Vocational Rehabilitation Services (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning outcome:  Through written assignments, students will demonstrate their ability to facilitate improved treatment outcomes by successfully integrating vocational rehabilitation into their clients’ care plans.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning outcome: Students will improve retention and completion rates for their clients, as well as reduce the risk of relapse, by understanding the basic concepts of motivational interviewing, the concept of ambivalence, strategies for building motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and the helpful aspects of each, and strategies for reinforcing the decision to change.  Written assignments will demonstrate this understanding.

Psychotherapeutic Medications (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning outcome: Students will demonstrate understanding of the use and side effects of antidepressants, the use and side effects stimulants, the use and side effects of anti-psychotics, the use and side effects of addiction medicines, and the use and side effects of hypnotics through written homework assignments.     

Solutions for the "Treatment-Resistant" Client (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning Outcome:  Through written assignments, students will demonstrate competence in counseling techniques that improve outcomes for challenging clients.  More specifically, the assignments will demonstrate proper use of several techniques and concepts, including exploring exceptions and scaling, how to distinguish denial from hopelessness, the counseling techniques of reframing and externalization, the interactional nature of "resistance", and the concept of preferred views.   

The Stages and Processes of Change (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning outcome:  Students will complete written assignments that demonstrate an understanding of the Stages of Change, including benefits and limitations of the Stages of Change model, how to assess clients for stage of change, interventions most helpful in the early stages of change, interventions most helpful in the later stages of change, and relapse prevention.

The Stages of Treatment (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning outcome:  Through written assignments, students will demonstrate an understanding of each of the stages of treatment, stage-informed treatment planning, stage-informed individual counseling, and stage-informed groups.

Teaching Self-Advocacy (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)

Specific learning outcome: Students will demonstrate, through written assignments, their ability to achieve successful outcomes by teaching clients to advocate for themselves.  The assignments will demonstrate fluency in the the concepts and principles of recovery, needs to be met by self-advocacy, resources needed for self-advocacy, and how to teach self-advocacy

Trauma-Informed Care (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning Outcome: Students will complete written assingments that demonstrate their ability to achieve successful outcomes with survivors of trauma.  This will include an understanding of the prevalence, symptoms, and risk factors for PTSD, trauma’s effect on the brain and how to heal it,  gender differences and traumatic grief, coping styles and resilience, and counselor wellness.

Treating Adolescents with Substance Use Disorders (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning Outcome: Through written assignments, students will demonstrate an understanding of the consequences of adolescent substance use, the factors to consider in placing adolescents, the components of effective adolescent treatment, the differences among 12 Step, TC, and family therapy interventions, and the special needs of adolescents in the juvenile justice system.   

Treatment Approaches for Women (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)                                                

Specific learning Outcome: Through written assignments, students will demonstrate an understanding of the specific needs of women with substance abuse problems, the extent to which women in the U.S. are involved in the abuse of alcohol and other drugs, gender specific barriers to treatment, common fears of women who need help, and how to address them, components of a comprehensive treatment services for women, and components of a good discharge plan, and the importance of continuing care.
